The Limits of Sanity Transgressed

We are sophisticated people in our modern age, not given to rashness or violence or racism, unlike our forebearers and Right wing religious fanatics like Bush and Cheney and me.

We bring up the case of Charlie Sheen and the conspiracy fo the Bush administration to kill thousands of our people so they could have an excuse to enrich themselves by invading Iraq of the sake of cheap oil, and we put along with this two further pieces of history, one from Germany in 1900 and another from China in 1900.

The point is to show how vastly not at all different are we today from those who preceded us, those who were crazed irrational xenophobic racists and conspiracy-driven lunatics. We'll take a very brief look at Charlie Sheen, just for fun, and then turn to an anti-Semitic pogrom in Germany, and to the Boxer Rebellion in China.

The point of this exercise will show that though we might like to think we are so awfully clever and progressive that in fact we are not different from the Germans and the Chinese when things go wrong internally, and that we will turn if stepped upon, not just Right wing religious bigots like me but all of us, including our so sophisticated Left wing progressive intellectuals like Charlie Sheen.

Here is our history, Charlie Sheen mouthing idiot conspiracy theories the Left likes to take seriously as intellectual and clever; then on to a German anti-Semitic pogrom; and finally a crazed and suicidal reaction of Chinese peasants to European colonialism and the opening up of China to the world. How different is Charlie Sheen from the German and the Chinese will be for clever people to decide:

9/11 Story

Boy, that Charlie Sheen is really thinking, all gears cranking, gaskets blowing, steam spewing; I hope he doesn't hurt himself, or anyone unlucky enough to be standing near him:

Speaking to The Alex Jones Show on the GCN Radio Network, the star of current hit comedy show Two and a Half Men and dozens of movies including Platoon and Young Guns, Sheen elaborated on why he had problems believing the government's version of events.

Sheen agreed that the biggest conspiracy theory was put out by the government itself and prefaced his argument by quoting Theodore Roosevelt in stating, "That we are to stand by the President right or wrong is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

"We're not the conspiracy theorists on this particular issue," said Sheen.

"It seems to me like 19 amateurs with box cutters taking over four commercial airliners and hitting 75% of their targets, that feels like a conspiracy theory. It raises a lot of questions."

Sheen described the climate of acceptance for serious discussion about 9/11 as being far more fertile than it was a couple of years ago.

"It feels like from the people I talk to in and around my circles, it seems like the worm is turning."

1900 March 15, KONITZ (Prussia, Germany)

A blood libel occurred after the death of a local student. Wolf Israelski was accused and arrested, while Count Plucker promoted riots against the Jews. After Israelski was proved innocent, two others, Moritz Lewy and Rosenthal, were arrested on the same charge. Rosenthal and Lewy were acquitted, but Lewy was sentenced to four years for denying he knew the victim. An accusation of ritual murder, based on the unexplained assassination of the student Ernst Winter in Konitz, West Prussia. Winter, the son of an architect of Prechlau, attended the gymnasium of Konitz. Although only nineteen years old, he was known for his licentiousness. On March 11, 1900, he left his boarding-house after dinner, and did not return. It was immediately thought probable that the young man had fallen through the ice while skating on the lake. Accordingly the lake was searched, and on March 15 parts of his body were discovered. His right arm was found in the cemetery, where some one had thrown it over the fence; and on April 15 his head was recovered from a pool. The body had been dismembered by some one possessing a knowledge of anatomy; and therefore suspicion first turned against the local butchers, especially against the Christian butcher Hoffmann, whose daughter had been frequently seen in Winter's company, and a member of whose household had been heard to express threats against Winter on account of his attention to the young woman.

Anti-Semitic Agitation and Excesses.

On June 8 of the same year a shed near the synagogue of Konitz was set on fire; and two days later excesses were committed against the synagogue and against Jewish homes to such an extent that the military had to be called out. Similar riots, though not of such a severe character, occurred at Czersk (April 22), Stolp and Bütow (May 21-22), Tuchel (June 10), and Komarczyn (June 17). An old man named Landecker, of Cammin, was without any provocation knocked down with a pitchfork. In all of these cases the sentences imposed upon the rioters or assailants were very light, while Jews, whenever they came before the court, met with hostile sentiment and received heavy sentences for the slightest offenses. A county official to whom a Jew complained of the insults to which he had been subjected on the street, replied: "You can easily obtain relief, if you give up the murderer." A synagogue sexton who defended himself with a stake against a crowd which assailed him was sentenced to spend a year in jail; and a similar sentence was imposed on a Jewish apprentice because he had beaten a boy who had jeered at him. A highly respected citizen, Jacob Jacoby of Tuchel, was sentenced to confinement for one year in the penitentiary for perjury (Oct. 10), because he had sworn that he had called some boys who had shouted "Hep-Hep!" after him "lümmel" (toughs) only after they had insulted him, while the boys swore that he had first called them offensive names. This sentence was indeed so repugnant to public opinion that the emperor commuted it to six months in jail, and revoked that part by which the convict was deprived of civil rights (March, 1901). The worst case of persecution was that of Moritz Lewy, referred to below.

There is a less than intuitive point to make at the end of the next look at cultures enraged and psychotic. We'll turn now to a short account of the mind-set of Chinese peasants in 1900, the same year the Germans rampaged against the Jews.

The following comes from Diana Preston, The Boxer Rebellion: China's war on Foreigners, 1900. Constable and Robinson:London; 1999. pp. 27-30.

[B]oxer propaganda-- often a rehash of old stories-- flourished, whipping up popular hysteria. Such propaganda projected people's anxiety about the present and fears for the future on to the foreigners and their Christian converts and demonized both.

One Boxer story to gain such ready and easy acceptance was that foreigners were responsible for the weather.

Telegraph lines were similarly feared. Wind moaning through the high telegraph poles sounded like spirits in torment. Rusty water dripping from the wire looked like the blood of the spirits of the air.

What they do is crazy and repulsive. What we do is clever and intellectual.

I bring this up in regard to a vile and obnoxious Muslim writing as a contributor a blog I visit daily, a writer who flouts the norms of our nations and brags about the rights of Muslims to practice their vile religion with impunity, and we had better get used to it or else.

Take this as cautionary: that we are not different from the Germans and the Chines of 106 years ago: that we are as crazy and stupid and fucked-up as is Charlie Sheen, willing and able to believe anything from conspiracy theories about 9/11, conspiracy theories about Jews drinking Aryan blood, conspiracy theories about Europeans trampling on the heads of the gods and making them cause droughts. This is a cautionary tale for the likes of our Muslim friend, that no matter how sophisticated we might think we are, we are just as likely to be as crazy and violent as anyone has ever been, and we will, in spite of it all, go crazy on the Muslims if they do not mend their ways and start living like normal people. They cannot trust us to be clever and sophisticated like Charlie Sheen. We can easily be crazy Right wing religious bigots like me.

Starting from zero I already hate Islam. Having been pushed as far as I have so far, Muslims would be smart to consider that I am truly one of the more reasonable people they will encounter in this war against us. There is no reason why Muslims should assume that all Westerners will always be stupid in support of Left dhimmi fascism. They can as easily be stupid in favor of blood libels and spirit offence. I conclude thus:

Watch out, Muslim arseholes: Not all of us are as reasonable as I.
