A Storm of Normal

Obviously not all Netherlanders are stoned all the time. It seems that many of them are even getting sick of the ones who are. They seem to think they should go so far as to shut down some of the drug industries and outlets that dot the nation. What's this? Are they stupid and evil Rightwing religious bigots like I am? Put some kind of stop to the drug culture of the Netherlands? These "proposed changes come at a time when an increasing number of governments are gradually coming round to the idea of following the Dutch example, precisely because it has been such a success." There you have it. The Dutch are evil and pig-headed. They see that their drug culture is a great success that nations around the world wish to emulate, and the Dutch, out of sheer evil intentions and malignity want to ruin the sterling success of it all because of... a Rightwing conspiracy? What else could it be? It seems a Rightwing government is not a real thing of Human volition, but something like bad weather, a mystery from the skies that one bears till it blows itself out,

"This wind of change has to do with the fact that there are now far more conservatives among the people's representatives in the Netherlands than there have been for many a year."

"More conservatives among the people's representatives." As if they came form outer space! What has this guy been smoking? Good Lord, bud, maybe not everyone in the Netherlands is a hippie. Maybe many people are sick and tired of the hippie bullshit. Maybe people are just plain fed up with the hippie crap fed to them daily for all these years: that violent and demanding and parasitic losers are a product of nativist bias and are a reaction against racist hostility. Oh, spare me. I'm sick of it too. Stop blowing that smoke up my arse. It's over. Hippies puff? Ha. Hippies suck!

Rutger van Santen, "High life in Holland under threat"

For over 30 years, the Netherlands has had the most liberal drugs policy in the world. But all that is about to change. After this week's parliamentary debate on the drugs issue, it looks like even the Netherlands' world-famous 'coffee shops' may not escape the present government's reforms.

During the debate, the government presented plans to ban 'grow shops', which sell seed and equipment for cultivating marijuana at home. Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin promised new legislation within a matter of months aimed at banning "everything that facilitates the domestic cultivation of cannabis" and imposing strict penalties on offenders.

Curtains for coffee shops?
A majority of MPs support the minister's efforts to take a much tougher line on the use, cultivation and sale of drugs. The spokesman for the main coalition party, the Christian Democrats, even advocated closing down the Netherlands' world famous coffee shops, where people can purchase a limited amount of soft drugs without facing legal sanctions. This proposal may also be able to count on a parliamentary majority.

This wind of change has to do with the fact that there are now far more conservatives among the people's representatives in the Netherlands than there have been for many a year. The coalition government currently running the country consists of three parties: the Christian Democrats, Labour and junior partner the Christian Union.

It is Labour's position that has undergone the biggest shift. Much to the vexation of the progressive opposition parties, Labour MPs have tend to vote along the same lines as their coalition partners since coming to power. And given that the opposition also includes the conservative VVD and the far right Freedom Party, both of which take a prohibitive stance on drugs, this is the first time in years that a real change in policy stands a chance of being implemented.

Success story
The left-wing opposition parties describe the changes as disastrous. For although the Dutch approach to drugs has been the target of much criticism from the rest of the world, its supporters within the Netherlands are quick to point out that it has been a shining success story. For years, the Netherlands has been at the very top of the rankings when it comes to the lowest number of drug-related deaths.

Experts say this is mainly due to the transparency of the Dutch system, the strict dividing line between hard drugs and soft drugs and the outstanding care for addicts. However, the current government is keen to jettison this liberal approach because of its own anti-drugs beliefs and because it is thought to contravene European regulations. Ironically, the proposed changes come at a time when an increasing number of governments are gradually coming round to the idea of following the Dutch example, precisely because it has been such a success.

http://www.radionetherlands.nl/currentaffairs/region/netherlands/080307-dutch-drugs

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know the libertarianesque spiel of "prohibition doesn't work" and the idea that the state shouldn't regulate peoples' vices anyway if all they do is ruin their own lives. Fine. But it isn't fine or people wouldn't vote for governments that toss drug users and dealers in jail. One in one hundred Americans is in prison today, mostly for drug related offenses. Is that a bad thing? Would it be better to have them all on the street instead? If people are criminals, throw them in jail. If people can't stop doing what is prohibited, what is the problem with throwing them in jail? Most free citizens are happy to see them go. That too is democracy. If 99 people out of 100 aren't "progressive," then go somewhere else to live or go to jail for offending them.

A success? Only for those on dope and those in the industry. Everyone else suffers. It's not just the dope culture dominance that offends: it is the povertarian ethos of the hippies that is sickening and repulsive. The government and its expert managers control the drug pandemic, so not to worry. Well it sucks. It sucks because it is a government scam in the first place, one that can never be anything good, never positive, never better, only a management problem that will get worse and worse and always managed more and more by more and more managers demanding more and more money and money and money for a bottomless piss-hole. Only hippies can like this mess, and they do. It's their living, career, and identity. Who needs them?

Geert Wilders is taking on the whole rotten hippie establishment, and because he does he lives under 24 hour per day guard to try to survive the rage and hatred of Muslims and the dhimmis who would also kill him like one did Pym Fortuyn. A society that can't say no to drug culture can't say no to jihadis either. They can't say no to being bullied, beaten, robbed, raped, and even murdered. There's only so much people will put up with, and this is the time the tide turns. Wilders stands alone today in the public mind as one man saying "No" very loudly. Only hippies complain about him. Fitna? It's a Dutch word meaning 'the totally preventable social troubles brought on by hippies.' Death Hippies.

Go, Wilders, Go!

FITNA.

http://fitnathemovie.com/

Dhimmitude: The Dutch Treat

I had a girlfriend who once insisted on wearing high-heel shoes to a party. Afterward, as we sat in the taxi going home, she turned to me and growled: "Don't say a word."

Mr. Geert Wilders has made open statements about prohibiting the Koran in The Netherlands and demanding the total assimilation of non-western cultures.

With the possible release of his film "Fitna" Wilders endangers the Dutch society abroad and in his own country at this moment.

I no longer sit still and say nothing:
I do not share his opinions, neither approve of his film.
Because Geert Wilders' opinion is not my opinion.

http://www.notouropinion.com/en/

I share Geert Wilders' opinion of Islam and the Koran. Outlaw the damned book, ban Muslim immigration from Europe, deport the criminals who aren't simply hanged for their crimes. Why wait till th party's over to admit it was all a mistake to dress up in some painful costume for the sake of posing? I no longer sit still and say nothing: Islam is a fascist poligion. Stop it.

Go, Wilders, Go!

A pink Merlo sloshes on Wilders

If you can think like Francesco Merlo, opining for all he's worth in the Courrier International, then you should have a job as a bureaucrat at the UN or the EU or in a deep dark hole in the ground somewhere. Very likely you can't think like he does, and in that case you will shake your head and wish for an earthquake to open up and swallow all of the Merlos of the world in one big gulp, leaving only the empty bottles as evidence of the drunk-on-power lunacy they indulged in.

I'm still waiting....

"Wilders, a threat to freedom of expression in Europe."

In the Netherlands, the populist deputy Geert Wilders is threatening to broadcast his anti-Muslim film soon. Numerous Muslim countries have already warned the Dutch government that the broadcasting of the film could have perilous consequences. The Italian editorialist Francesco Merlo reacts to the polemic. "Is it possible that we Westerners will have to give in to the threats and ban the film simply because the thesis of the film is not to the taste of ayatollahs, imams and fundamentalists? A film that has yet to be released, that nobody has seen, but that is already endangering the world's security ... . However, promoting mediocre works of art, films and books that are gratuitously blasphemous and lift unsavoury characters such as Wilders to the rank of persecuted artists, is a way of killing freedom of expression ... ."
http://europe.courrierinternational.com/eurotopics/article.asp?langue=uk&publication=07/03/2008&cat=POLITICS&pi=6

Did I just read that a nobody Italian pseudo-intellectual has determined that he and his friends are the arbiters of public taste and of political commentary allowable in the free world? I do think that's exactly what I just read. Yes, arbiters make frei. What was I thinking. I should clear it with Merlo and his Philospher Kings before I venture another thought in my mediocre artsy fashion, unsavory character that I probably am. Shame on me for writing. Excuse me while I go punish myself.

Fitna Comes to the West

Netherlands Television won't broadcast Wilder's film, Fitna. Dutch politicians are going crazy trying to prevent Wilders from showing the film at all. And other places in the West, England, for example, go out of their ways to malign Wilders as a "far right" politician, as if he's Hitler. But what we see is a concerted effort on the part of dhimmi fascism to refuse to acknowledge what the people know too well: that Islam is a fascist poligion. Nobody's fooled by this state-sponsored crap, by this media-driven bullshit. Our intelligentsia comprises cowards and fools and few others of any other kind. That's what makes Wilders shine in this time of muck and mire. He's honest.

Dutch fear terrorism ahead of new Koran film

"No Dutch broadcaster wants to show the new film, the Volkskrant newspaper reported on Thursday, meaning Wilders will probably launch it on the Internet and at a news conference in The Hague, tentatively scheduled for March 28, ANP reported."
Full story at al-Reuters.

Wilders promises to deliver. We shall see. And what shall we see? Very likely the savagery of Islam in full force yet again. And then more lies and dhimmitude from the media and our disgusting politicians. But, we will likely also see the rising of the people against such vile and odious behaviour on the part of our public intellectuals and political leaders. This, by a strange twist of life, is a great thing for those who wish to make our lives better and our societies stronger and safer. This is a great winnowing time.

The Netherlands: TV Shuns Anti-Islam Film

No Dutch television broadcaster is willing to show a short film critical of Islam and the Koran by the right-wing politician Geert Wilders, Radio Netherlands said on its Web site, citing a report in the newspaper De Volkskrant. Mr. Wilders's demand that the film be shown unedited and in its entirety is the biggest obstacle to its broadcast, the paper said, adding, "It now appears that the whole film, which lasts about 15 minutes, will not be seen on Dutch television." Mr. Wilders has said that he would also show the film on the Internet.
This story at the equally disreputable New York Times.

Below we see a few pieces of Islamic rubbish strewn about as usual, the first from "Joshua Cohen," a joke if there ever was one. Muslims seem to delight in pretending to be Jews who love Islam. Go figure. We end with a comment from Mark Alexander, author and commentator at numerous blogs of interest to those of us who care for this line of inquiry. But it doesn't end with Mark at all. No, it ends on a typical jarring note that I leave to the reader to laugh at. Comments below from the silliest paper in Britain, The Independent. Well, OK, it has a lot of competition.

"Quran a fascist book?? has Mr Wilders actually read it...what a farce. It has been the most intellectual and progressive book for the past 1400 years and continues to be so."

Hi, Islam is a religion of peace and ask its followers to be merciful to everyone friends and enemy. But this message is not the weakness of Islam. We (muslims) have to be merciful to those who respect humanity but be harsh to those who create chaos in the world.

The world has been destroyed by western values that allow their allies to kill muslims all over the world (Palestine, India, Afghanistan, East taimor, Kosovo, Bosnia and Somalia) but once muslims retaliate they become militants and terrorists.
Western values include justice for all as well but why not this value is universal and you know the answer better. Abusing Islam is freedom of speech and denying holocaust is a crime. Double standards...
Cost of life of a human being is same but west don't realize that and history always repeat itself.

Tom you show your ignorance in anything to do with the Quran. The Quran, as much as it is a Moral and spiritual book, is a Legal text and with any legal text needs one specialised to read, understand and deduce from it.

I ask Tom, or for any reader, to look at the verses that were revealed at the time when Prophet Muhammed and his companions were being attacked by the Pagan military foes from Mecca. Yes, the Quran DID encourage the Muslims to attack and defend themselves, just like Uncle Sam encouraged young Americans to go and fight the Germans. So context is important.

Posted by: Fiaz Hussain

I doubt Wilders can understand what the Quran is talking about, since most muslims themselves do no. The Quran verses calling for "early" muslims to fight the infidels was strictly meaning the Pagan arabs in the arabian peninsula. The extremists & terrorists extract the verses out of its original settings & historical circumstances then place it in a different background to twist its meaning & allude to fighting nearly everyone!

Women's state today is due to customs & traditions more than the religion which interpretation is monopolised by narrow minded men. Wilders is far from being objective & i don't think he wants to know facts but rather insult & stir a controversy, much like some muslims do. Wilders & extremists are 2 sides of one coin, unfortunately.

Posted by: S Ahmed

Ok, ahmed, where exactly is the disclaimer in the koran that it doesn't apply in 2008? It's prescriptive, a call to genocide. And comparing this dutch politician to muslim extremists shows how much credibilty you have.
(isn't it about now you tell everyone the bible is just as violent? Some idiots believe it too)

Infidels are your sworn enemies (Sura 4:101).
Be ruthless to the infidels (Sura 48:29).
Make war on the infidels who dwell around you (Sura 9:123, 66:9).
Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day (Sura 9:29).
Strike off the heads of infidels in battle (Sura 47:4).

Never be a helper to the disbelievers (Sura 28:86).
Kill the disbelievers wherever we find them (Sura 2:191).
No Muslim should be killed for killing an infidel (al-Bukhari 1:3:111).
The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land (Sura 5:33).

I would love to know what Joshua Cohen has been smoking. It certainly hasn't been tobacco! He stated: "It [the Qur'an] has been the most intellectual and progressive book for the past 1400 years and continues to be so."

That is a most remarkable statement, Mr Cohen!

What is "intellectual" and "progressive" about a book which vilifies non-believers, advocates violence against all that do not submit in obedience to its non-existent god, Allah, and a book which advocates treating women as second class citizens, and calls Jews "apes and pigs".

If you think that is "progressive", then you might also categorize Mein Kampf as "progressive", too.

Geert Wilders is right when he likens the Qur'an to Hitler's tome; and he is right, too, when he calls the book "fascistic".

Geert Wilders is the most courageous politician in Europe. Would that we had more like him, instead of the wimps we have got.

Geert Wilders is doing the right thing in bringing out the film, Fitna. He has my full support, and the support of many others too.

Freedom of expression and freedom of speech must be used lest they be taken away from us. These treasures can be likened to muscles: If they are not used, they atrophy.

It is most remarkable that we have the greatest advocates of freedom of speech and expression these days in two of Europe's smallest countries: Denmark and the Netherlands.

It has been noted that not one British newspaper nor one American newspaper had the courage to print the Motoons. Cowards all!

SRO for Wilder' Bizarre Guerrilla Theatre

The Dutch intelligentsia are freaking out over visions of their Muslims going wild in the streets if Geert Wilders' short film, Fitna, airs... ever, anywhere. Too bad for them. A Dutch poll shows that 45% of Netherlanders want the film shown anyway, violence from Muslims and Left crazies or no. Seven percent of Netherlanders don't want the film shown under any circumstances, which is likely the seven percent of Netherlanders who are Muslim and Left loonies leaders in government. ["Muslims, mostly of Moroccan and Turkish origin, make up about six percent of the country's population of 16 million people." cnsnews.com] Muslims and their dhimmi stooges are stuck with all the cumbersome power of the state and no way to use it. Fitna becomes "guerrilla theatre." All the intelligentsia can do is collectively groan and slap their foreheads.

Showing Wilders' Film "Bizarre" says Nova editor Carel Kuyl

No-one wants to broadcast Wilders' film

No Dutch public or commercial television station is willing to broadcast MP Geert Wilder's anti-Koran film, the Volkskrant reports on Thursday.

The paper says Wilders insists the entire 10 to 15-minute feature be screened, a condition no broadcaster is willing to meet.

'We would not do that with a film produced by the Christian Democrats or the Liberals and also not for [Geert Wilder's party] PVV,' Herman van Gelderen, head of NRCV programme Netwerk said. 'We are also extremely cautious about encouraging hatred and discrimination.'

Nova editor Carel Kuyl told the paper that Wilders was willing to allow a preview of his film on the condition programme chiefs agreed to broadcast it anyway. That is 'bizarre', Kuyl was quoted as saying.

Wilders will now launch his film, titled Fitna, on the internet later this month. The Volkskrant reports that the press centre in The Hague, Nieuwspoort, has agreed to the presentation of Wilders' film on March 28, pending security arrangements.

Meanwhile, the AD reports that the Dutch anti-terrorism coordinator has raised the terror alarm level from 'limited' to 'substantial'. Both Wilders' film and the extension of the Dutch military mission in Afghanistan influenced the decision, the paper says.

The Netherlands' governing classes roll out th big guns to prevent Wilders from showing his film. It ain't working. Much sound and fury from them but little light. The show must go on.

Wilders' Guerrila Theater

[T]he enforcers of political correctness have failed to grasp is that things have already gone too far. It's no longer about dialogue, it's about a deadly ideological conflict. Yet when momentous issues pivot around hanging up a poster or releasing a home movie it's probably a sign that we are both in deep trouble and deep denial.

Wilders is no longer engaged in 'dialogue'. He's engaged in guerrila theater; gone outside of parliament to snipe from behind the cover of the very things his unnamed opponents shelter behind. It's not the art gallery that is temporarily shutting down but the cognitive processes of the politically correct mind. They're in an endless loop with no hope of escape until someone hits the reset button.

For those with a nasty sense of humor, one might smile at the shenanigans of Sarkozy ["Sarkozy on Wednesday voiced his solidarity with Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, who fears a Muslim backlash over a film criticising Islam made by a far-right Dutch MP." afp], and the Euro-dhimmis doing their futile best to stop the people from witnessing this act of courage on Wilders' part. For those with a bit of soul, one can only smile at the courage of Dutch citizens who demand this play take place on the centre stage of the world, the Dutch people acting as setting. Enter America.

Southern Hospitality for Wilders' Fitna

Patrick Goodenough, "Europe Braces for Release of Film Linking Koran to Terror"

CNSNews.com International Editor; March 06, 2008

(CNSNews.com) - A leading U.S.-based Internet company says it's ready for any electronic attacks that may come its way for hosting a Web site featuring a provocative short film that is critical of the Koran. The movie, made by a controversial Dutch politician and due for release any time now, has sparked protests in the Islamic world and concerns in Europe.

The site is hosted by Network Solutions, a northern Virginia-based tech company that manages about seven million Internet domain names.

Asked whether the company expects the site to draw much interest or strong reaction, spokeswoman Susan Wade said Wednesday said she could not say how much traffic the site was drawing, "but we are always prepared for any kind of denial-of-service attack, whether it be from anywhere for any reason. It's something that we're always preparing for."

If people have complaints about the content of Web sites hosted by the company, she said, they could report it.

"We have an acceptable-use policy that all customers agree to. [In the event of complaints] we would review the content, and take any necessary action."

The acceptable-use policy prohibits the posting of content "that is obscene, defamatory, libelous, unlawful, harassing, abusive, threatening, harmful, vulgar, constitutes an illegal threat, violates export control laws, hate propaganda, fraudulent material or fraudulent activity, invasive of privacy or publicity rights, profane, indecent or otherwise objectionable material of any kind or nature."

[....]

In a survey by Dutch pollster Maurice du Hond, 45 percent of respondents said Wilders had the right to make the film and to release it; 35 percent said although he had the right to do so, considering the consequences, he should be advised not to; 10 percent said everything possible should be done to persuade him not to go ahead; and seven percent said he didn't have the right to do it.

The usual places one would expect to see a Dutch-made short, i.e. Netherlands television, won't air Wilder's film. They go for all kinds of Leftist arty porno, but a short by a "Rightwing extremist" is not happening there. It looks to be going through an American company. Ah yes, once again it's America at the centre of all things evil, like showing this film to the world.

Network Solutions, LLC is a technology company which was founded in 1979. The domain name registration business has become the most important division of the company; as of 2006, Network Solutions manages more than 7.6 million domain names. Their size, founding status, and longevity have made them one of the most important corporations affecting domain name price and policy.

And no doubt more to come later.

Geert Wilders is a Zionist plot.

Although a Catholic, he has admired Israel many times, which he had previously visited "about 40 times". He claims that people can "work for their money" there, unlike in the Netherlands. He has experienced a special feeling of solidarity, which he had not experienced in any other country before and he would like to move there. People from his former People`s Party for Freedom and Democracy have pointed out several times that they suspect Wilders is being instructed by the Israeli Embassy in the Netherlands. He has denied the allegations, but when he was a member of the party, he had an employee who came directly from the Israeli Embassy.
Due to death threats, Wilders is constantly under protection.

The Flowering of Dutch Muliti-culturalism: "So much hate"

"I'm 18 years old and have friends who feel so much hate against Arabic people because [we] are terrified."
****

The following comment comes from a blog by a liberal leftist writing from an island in the Pacific ocean, but the comment itself is written by a young person who doesn't have the luxury of spinning nonsense from afar. The comment is from a Dutchman stuck with Muslims. Following that, some more news and views of the Netherlands and government regarding Geert Wilders and his up-coming film, Fitna. First, a young Dutchman.

Fitna: The Reality.

Hello,

First let me introduce myself[.] [I']m a man from the [N]etherlands.

[L]et me explain what far right means. [I]n countries such as [H]olland, far right is something like [you] get [to keep] what [wage or profit] you have worked for. [S]o [free enterprise and capitalism are] economical[ly beneficial] for a lot of people, better[.] [O]n the opposite[, i.e. the Left, you have] those... parties that focus more on growing as a union[;] so better social securities, [i.e. welfare state benefits].

[A]nyway you can't imagine how terribly bad it is in Holland [between] Muslim people and Dutch people. Most [Muslims] came here in the sixties when Dutch people were feeling too good to do stuff like cleaning and working in a factory. Nothing wrong [with the Muslims working in the Netherlands] at that moment but then they [had] children, and those children were getting a Dutch passport and a Turkish one for example, [i.e. dual citizenship without assimilation].

Well, we don't [have many] murders as like in [America] but somehow Muslims were getting in the news as they where involved with some incidents, [known locally as creating "American conditions"] so people [i.e. Dutch] were getting more and more hate against [Muslim criminals], and not just hate[:] some were a bit afraid because they [Muslims] were [portrayed as] people with loose hands, [i.e. ill tempers]. Dutch people don't like the [underclass Muslim] threat and that's how Geert Wilders gets his [media-described] extreme ideas. And in Dutch schools it goes further than that. [There are a] lot of fights [between] Dutch people and Muslim people, not [because of] their religion but just because Dutch [teens]and [young people, grandchild age,] want to stay in charge of Holland and don't [want to] tolerate [aggressive] foreign people anymore. I think somehow that this [conflict] between people from the Netherlands and Muslims people, or people who look Arabic, is going to escalate.

I'm 18 years old and have friends who feel so much hate against Arabic people because [we] are terrified. [Youths and teens] are the people who [are] voting for Geert Wilders [in the] elections. I hope I made it a bit clear and I'm sorry for my terrible English :P

Geert Wilders' film Fitna is coming closer to a theatre near you, and the Dutch political scene is lighting up. No, not lighting up a joint, which might for once be a good idea for them; no, in this case the leading lights of Netherlands' politicking are lighting up the dark and maybe previously hidden depths of their cowardice, and displaying their manipulation and hatred of the Dutch people for all to see. The Dutch ruling clique's government, the political powers that be, have recently tried to intimidate Wilders into withdrawing his film to placate Muslims; below we'll see the police today won't give him assurances that if they see his film they won't outlaw it on the spot; and the media, further below, assign blame to Wilders for crimes uncommitted and those yet to come-- crimes likely to be committed by Muslims but the fault of Wilders. The Left dhimmi fascists blame Wilders for any problems to come, try to stop him from showing his film, and grovel before the Muslim world in the hope of being spared whatever consequence there is to being alive in a world of angry and spoiled Muslims who want still more, knowing full well they'll get still more if Europeans see a public Muslim temper tantrum. Wilders doesn't put up with Muslim bullshit, and Wilders pays, or will if the Left dhimmi fascists get their way.

Fitna the Movie

The Hague - The website for the anti-Qur'an film Fitna by Geert Wilders is online under the name fitnathemovie. There is little to see at the moment: only the cover of the Qur'an with the text "Allahu Akhbar", which means "God is Great" and "Geert Wilders presents Fitna - Coming Soon" against a black background.

Party for Freedom leader Geert Wilders announced two weeks ago that his film will be shown on this website. He is also negotiating with television stations to broadcast Fitna.

On Tuesday, Mr Wilders said he was prepared to show the film to the national terrorism coordinator Tjebbe Joustra one day ahead of it being broadcast on the condition that it would not be banned. The MP stresses that his film does not contravene Dutch law.

It's coming. One would have expected a little more order and organization from the Dutch, like a schedule. But since there is this interlude we have the dubious pleasure of previews and cartoons. An editorial, presumably from a public intellectual. If Netherlanders were ever like this fellow I wonder how it is they managed to hold out against the Nazi invasion for as long as they did.

Ready, Set, Cringe

Wednesday, March 5, 2008 When provocations take over the debate
IN POLITIKENS VIEW

By Tøger Seidenfaden, editor in chief

The Dutch government is still hoping that the right wing politician Geert Wilders will refrain from releasing the short film that he has been threatening to launch for weeks now. The film contains one of the crudest attacks on European freedom of thought in memory, since it appears that its message is that the Koran should be banned. A proposal to ban a book, simply because one does not like its content, harks back to the darkest period in European history.

But it is not, however, Wilders self-contradictory extremism that worries the Dutch government, but rather the anticipation of peaceful (boycott) and violent (bombs) Muslim reactions. According to NATO's Secretary-General, both Dutch and Danish soldiers in Afghanistan are increasingly in danger – in the case of Danish soldiers as a result of the rekindled cartoon crisis.

The classical example to show that freedom of expression has limits, is that you are not allowed to shout 'Fire!' in a theatre full of people. In that light, the Dutch government is acting in a basically responsible manner in disassociating itself from extremism, and urging Wilders to think again.

There is little doubt that we in many cases are currently having to defend the right to commit wholesale stupidity and provocation. It can be difficult to determine when our principles are being manipulated by stuntmen and hostile ideologists, and when they are defending the freedom of debate and the freedom of artistic expression.

Legally and politically we are naturally adamant. The limits of freedom of expression cannot be moved because of threats, or because other societies have not yet discovered it. But it is more than ever vital now, that both governments and the rest of us insist on the right to put our foot down in relation to those who are only looking for confrontation and conflict, and just leave the consequences to society. Here, the Christian Democratic Prime Minister in Holland is doing the right thing – just as the non-socialist Swedish government did when Sweden had a prelude to a Mohammed crisis. As far as diplomacy and dialogue is concerned, our own government is unfortunately still conspicuously silent. It is possible that the government is satisfied with its dogged determination. But in reality, it is failing in its responsibilities.

I assumed that a high school diploma in Europe still meant something. Obviously I was wrong. Now, about y remark on the Dutch holding out so valiantly against the German invasion? OK, that was unkind. But look at the beating they gave the English in the Dutch East Indies.

All is not lost. People in the Netherlands voted for Wilders and his group. More will vote next time. Sane and responsible government in the Netherlands is not something we must have overnight. This, the grovelling and the blaming and the whingeing and weeping from the dhimmi govenment is a good thing in that it shows by praxis, the propaganda of the deed, in blood and stone just what one gets from this kind of behaviour in this kind of situation, a lesson it seems each generation must learn the hard way rather than relying on past experience and common sense. Now they will find out for certain. New leaders will emerge.

Grovelling invites a beating.

Terrorist Expert: Government Concern over Quran Documentary Reflects Weakness

"The Dutch Government is insufficiently aware of how its messages are perceived by the Muslim world." This was stated by Uri Rosenthal, the faction chairman of the Liberal Party in the Dutch Senate and a leading expert on terrorism. He said that by demanding that Wilders not broadcast his movie on the Quran, violence and incitement, the Government is ignoring the fact that this is perceived in Muslim countries as Government pressure without consequences and thus is a sign of weakness. Rosenthal added that the government shows further weakness by stating that it will hold PVV leader Wilders responsible for any violence if his documentary is broadcast. He thinks that Denmark's firm position on the Mohammed cartoons issue is far more effective than that of the Dutch."

Herodotus and Thucydides and many others from antiquity knew well these lessons. Not so long ago Machiavelli wrote on this too:

I]f you yield to a threat, you do so in order to avoid war, and more often than not, you do not avoid war. For those before whom you have thus openly demeaned yourself by yielding, will not stop there, but will seek to extort further concessions, and the less they esteem you the more incensed will they become against you. On the other hand, you will find your supporters growing cooler towards you, since they will look upon you as weak or pusillanimous. But if, as soon as you become aware of your adversary's intentions, you prepare to use force, even though your forces be inferior to his, he will begin to respect you, and, since those with which you were allied will now esteem you, they will be ready to help when you begin to arm, which they would never have done had you given up.
